Disability Awareness Advert and Evaluation

Evaluation:

My group was me, Dan, Bobby and Niamh. We were given the task to create an advert on disability awareness, and aim it at our target audience who we chose was teenagers and young adults as we wanted to raise awareness in schools about disabilities to make more people understanding of people with disabilities. The advert we created was to raise awareness to the charity Scope which is a charity that supports people with disabilities and their carers and families. The reason we chose Scope was because they target every kind of disability and people of any age which would make it more relatable to our target audience and a wider audience who would see the advert. We tried to make the advert inspirational and heart felt, but also using bright happy colours to get the attention of the viewers.

I worked with Dan, Bobby and Niamh. We decided that I would film the footage, with the others helping by arranging the props and students. We then spoke to Mr Johnson and the resource base for the hearing impaired students and found out who wanted to feature in our advert. Me and Niamh planned the advert together onto a story board, and Dan and Bobby did the research into the charity and other examples of disability awareness adverts. Me and Dan did the majority of the editing onto premier, to create the final advert.

The research that we did to start with was to research a range of charities who support people with disabilities but in the end we chose Scope as they are not for a specific disability making it more general and more relatable. To plan the sequence we created the story board. We did this by watching other disability awareness adverts to get ideas, we then chose the music and the type of camera shots we wanted to use.
Charities:
Scope -

'Scope is a charity that exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then, we’ll be here.'

My initial feedback of the advert was that it was a good construction and was put together well however the use of the green screen could have been done better i.e. it could have been smoother and more fitted to the camera screen. Other people agreed to an extent that although the ideas were good and the sequence went well together, it could have been better quality filming and use of props. Overall I think our sequence was very successful as it was the first time we used the green screen, and we all agreed on the ideas straight away making it easy to create the story board at the beginning of the project which then meant we could begin filming as soon as it was possible.

The things that I think went well, were the planning of the advert as we all agreed on the ideas that had been suggested, making it easy to create the story board and begin the planning time table. I also think the final advert is successful due to the editing. In hindsight I would be more organised and would plan earlier when to get the interviews from the participants so that we would have longer to film. I would also do the green screen filming in a better environment as the wind inside made it difficult to film and it was creased.

From completing this task I have learnt skills such as how to edit the green screen on premier, and also how to properly edit things such as the sound, the shot and the timings. I have also learnt communication is very important as this would have helped us complete the advert in faster time. During the filming, it became clear that compromise is very important when what you want is not always easy or possible. I think each group should have a range of people e.g. a good editor, a good filmer, someone who will plan and direct so that things will be done to the best it can be and someone who is confident to be a key part in the video. As if you have a good editor they will be the person who makes the final sequence as good as it can be if the filming doesn't always go to plan, and in this construction my group had a good team of editors.

Looking ahead, the things I have learnt from this production will be important as it means that I will choose the group that fits my needs and will help me to accomplish the best production possible. This learning will also be significant as now I have skills in premier i can use in future productions.

Represenation

Gender - Female

Stereotypes of this group:

  • Weak
  • Not clever
  • Stay at home
  • Good cooks
  • Clean
  • Good Parents
Examples of stereotypical media for women:
Music
Magazine

Image result for legally blonde
Movie
   Counter typical media:

This is an example of counter typical media because Lady Gaga does not always dress like the 'typical' or 'average' woman, or how a woman 'should dress. She also sings songs such as 'Edge of Glory' which says about how she does not need a man to do well and become a superstar. Whereas alot of popular songs are related to love or relationships.

Club advert remake and evaluation

My group to re-make the club advert was me, Abby, Jack and Oakley. I believe that between us we managed the task well as we shared the parts of the characters out well, as everyone got the ones they were comfortable with, and also everyone was part of the video multiple times. We planned our sequence by firstly re watching the advert and creating a list of props and scenes that we needed. We then assigned each person specific parts, and studied the camera shots in each scene so we knew what we had to do.
The factors we took into consideration when planning, shooting and editing were things such as the environment we were in, as this could have effected how similar our acting was to the original advert, also things such as props and the skills of the filming on the camera as this would either make or break the shot for the advert. Overall I think our sequence was very successful as we all took it seriously, and it was almost identical timing in each scene to the original advert for club chocolate bars. I think the things that worked the best were the timings, and also the camera shots as they were very similar to the original, and also because they look quite professional as we made sure we took time and retakes to get the right shot for every scene. If we were to redo it, then in hindsight I would ensure the backgrounds were more similar to the original advert and also I would try to get more similar costumes to the people in the advert.
From completing this task I have learnt about different camera shots and the importance of having a range to make different impacts on the audience. As if it makes it more interesting for the audience. This learning will be important for when completing future projects as it has showed me how to do different camera shots and has also given me more confidence in front of the camera.

Gillette evaluation - The best a man can get:
The advert is telling the audience that if a man uses a Gillette razor, then he will be the best he can be. The advert shows scenes of a man and his son, a man on his wedding day, and a man in the Olympics, which tells the audience that a man can do anything if he uses a Gillette razor.

In the advert there are a lot of 'medium long shots' this is because then the viewer can see the setting around the character telling them the whole story. However there are also some pan left and pan right shots to show the characters on their journeys. They also used natural coloured shots to make it seem realistic. The song in the background fits the advert because it is about a father and son.

Mise-En-Scene

Mise en-scene from Great Baddow High School Media

Settings and props:
1- spaceship, aliens, laser guns, space, planets.
2- wedding, rings, flowers, dresses, hearts.
3- ghosts, clowns, screaming, children, dark lighting.

Facial expressions and body language:
Image 1- The two men look confused or focused on something. The dark colours convey a bad mood in the scene.
Image 2- The blood on the mans top tells us that something bad has happened which conveys a bad mood because of fear or anger.
Image 3- The green uniform immediately presents army or war, which conveys feelings of fear, anger and pain.

Positioning of characters and objects within a frame:
Image 1- The couple are sat apart from each other in a busy room full of objects shows that there may be conflict. The woman looks angry and the man looks guilty which presents that this could be a Rom-com or a romance movie.
Image 2-
Image 3- The fact the two men are stood close together suggests that they have a close bond and because of the guns in the image it also suggests that the genre of the film is an action film.
Image 4- The man stood in the middle of the image alone, shows that he is on his own surrounded by other people. The robots around the edge of the image suggest that it is a science fiction film.

How does MES convey the period?
The setting and props in the scene convey the period because of the old fashioned decoration and rustic design. Also the colours and style present that it is from a upper class house in an early period e.g Victorians. The costumes in the scene are both old fashioned and classy. The woman is wearing a dark grey dress, usually worn by wealthy women, and the man in the suit, looks like a butler confirming the time period that it is in the early periods. The woman's body language presents that she is above the man as she is presenting him something and looking worried. The man is taking something and looking serious which also presents him as a butler. Butlers were mainly popular in the 19th century which confirms the era. The positioning of the characters in the scene is that they are in the middle of the shot meaning that there is props and furniture around them. Also, it makes them look small and makes the room look big, like a big old fashioned family home. The lighting in the scene is dark and eerie. This presents the scene to be in the Victorian era because they mainly had candle light then and dark rooms, not bright electric lights.

Types of lighting:
1- artificial lighting, bright colours
2- black and white contrast, shadows
3- natural lighting, brightly lit sets
4- black silhouettes, grey contrast
5- dull and dark colours, bright stage light
6- dull colours, neutral tones

Key lights, filler lights and back lights:
1- lamp= key light, blinds= filler lights, window= back lights
2- street light= key light, moon= filler lights, floor= back lights
3- door way= key light, white jacket= filler light, reflections= back light
4- heart= key light, hanging light= filler lights, window= back light

Dancing animals premier

In the video I created, I used effects to make the transitions smoother from each clip I chose to be part of the video. I also faded out the music I used at the end of each clip so that the next part could stand out and make an impact. I used black and white effects on some of the clips because in the James Bond scenes it makes it more serious to the viewer and also the black and white creates tension as it doesn't have the bright colours causing distraction. The fades of scenes creates a sense of mystery and when the second song comes on the viewer is left shocked because from the bright colours and the dancing bears is a happy part, and then the transition to slower music and black and white scenes immediately creates a contrast for the viewer.

Youtube video

Big Sean has the genres 'Hip-hop' and 'Rap' in his song Blessings, feat Drake and Kanye. Throughout the video you only see the colours black white and grey, this may have veen done to reflect the mood in the song. At the beginning of the video there are alot of long scenes, where as when it develops and the song speeds up the scenes get shorter and there are alot of quick cuts and changes.

Semiotics

Theory created by Barthes

The camera angle could mean that because you’re looking up at the characters you are below them and they are or they believe they’re better than you.
